Access to affordable healthcare remains a significant challenge for many individuals and families, often leaving them without consistent care or support when they need it most. An example in our community is Maria J.
Maria has been a patient with Loudoun Free Clinic for over six years. Though she previously had medical insurance through her employer, after leaving her job, she found herself unable to secure affordable health insurance. Recognizing the importance of having a reliable healthcare provider in case of an emergency, Maria decided to apply to become a patient with Loudoun Free Clinic.
After enrolling at our clinic, Maria primarily visited for routine care and sick visits. Then in 2025, she felt severe pain in her back and came in for an appointment. She initially expected that she would need physical therapy to resolve the pain. However, following a series of medical appointments, she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
Initially shocked and fearful, Maria and her daughter connected with the free clinic’s Community Health Worker, Dinorah. Dinorah helped Maria with her referral to the Inova Schar Cancer Institute in Loudoun. Having support through this frightening and overwhelming time helped Maria quickly get the treatment she needed. She is currently receiving ongoing treatment from Inova Schar, including participating in a clinical trial.
Maria has expressed optimism about her future and deep gratitude toward the clinic. She states, “I am beyond grateful for everyone who works there. The way they have welcomed me has been fantastic. The care I have received from the clinic and its partners has truly helped improve my health.”
She also encourages others facing similar challenges to seek care: “Anyone experiencing difficulties with health insurance, I would recommend applying.” Maria further emphasized the importance of regular check-ups: “Everyone should monitor their health regularly to make sure everything is okay.”
