Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is often referred to as a “silent killer”, as it often doesn’t reveal symptoms. At Loudoun Free Clinic, we are committed to providing comprehensive preventative and ongoing care for this disease, which affects nearly half of the U.S. population.

What is Hypertension?

Hypertension is defined by elevated blood pressure in the arteries. It increases the risk for both heart disease and stroke, the leading causes of death in the United States.

How Does Hypertension Develop?

There are many causes for hypertension. The leading cause is genetics. If close relatives have a history of high blood pressure, there is a greater chance one could also experience this condition. Genetics can influence how our body regulates fluids and salts – both of which can heavily impact blood pressure levels.

Other potential causes of hypertension include:

Lifestyle

A sedentary lifestyle, as well as a diet high in sodium or low in potassium, can make it more likely for someone to develop hypertension. Other factors include alcohol intake, smoking, weight, and stress levels.

Obesity

Excess weight often co-exists with hypertension, for a number of reasons:

  • Increased Insulin Resistance, which significantly affects how the body regulates blood sugar and fluids
  • Increased Blood Volume, as excess body fat requires more blood to deliver oxygen and nutrients to body tissue
  • Inflammation, which impacts how blood vessels function

Age

Over time, blood vessels lose elasticity, which can result in increased blood pressure. Preventative measures can help to prevent age-related symptoms. A person’s primary care provider can advise them about what preventative measures might be helpful.

Stress

Occasional stress can temporarily elevate blood pressure, and chronic stress can contribute to hypertension and generalized inflammation.

Hypertension Symptoms

Many people experiencing hypertension do not experience symptoms. However, some symptoms of hypertension may include, but are not limited to:

  • Headaches
  • Shortness of Breath
  • Nosebleeds
  • Dizziness or Vertigo
  • Vision Problems
